Frequently Asked Questions
What you need to know…

A smear test, also known as a cervical screening test or Pap smear, is a simple and effective way to assess the health of your cervix – the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. During the test, a small sample of cells is gently collected from the cervix and analysed in a laboratory to identify any early changes that may require monitoring or treatment.

Cervical screening is one of the most reliable tools for detecting pre-cancerous changes before they develop into cervical cancer. While most abnormalities are not cancer, identifying them early means they can be managed promptly, helping you protect your long-term health.

At PureGP, we offer smear tests in a calm, private environment with experienced GPs who prioritise your comfort and wellbeing.

Your smear test will be carried out by an experienced GP during a short appointment. The procedure typically takes only a few minutes. Here’s what you can expect:

1. Comfortable positioning – You will be invited to lie on the examination couch. A speculum is gently inserted into the vagina to allow a clear view of the cervix.

2. Sample collection – A soft brush is used to collect cells from the cervix and the area around the opening of the cervix.

3. Laboratory analysis – Your sample is preserved and sent to a specialist laboratory for detailed analysis.

While you may notice some pressure or mild discomfort, the procedure should not be painful. If you experience any unease, your clinician will adapt the examination to maintain your comfort throughout.

Smear tests are primarily used to screen for pre-cancerous changes in the cervix, but they can also help detect other conditions, such as:

· Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), which are precancerous changes in the cervical cells

· Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, a common sexually transmitted virus that can cause cervical cell changes

· Cervical cancer in its early stages

· Inflammation or infection of the cervix (cervicitis)

· Atypical glandular cells (AGC), which may indicate changes in the glandular tissue of the cervix or uterus

If your results indicate any changes, our team will guide you through the next steps and ensure you receive appropriate follow-up care.

While many patients follow NHS cervical screening intervals, some individuals choose private screening for greater flexibility, faster appointments, continuity of care, or peace of mind.

Standard UK guidelines recommend:

· Ages 25–49: screening every 3 years

· Ages 50–64: screening every 5 years

At PureGP, you can arrange a smear test at a time that suits you – whether you are due for routine screening, feel your appointment has been delayed, or simply prefer a private clinical setting.

If you are experiencing symptoms such as unexpected vaginal bleeding, unusual discharge, or persistent pelvic discomfort, please speak with one of our clinicians, who may advise screening or additional investigation.

Smear tests are very safe. You may experience mild discomfort or light spotting afterwards, which usually settles quickly.

Complications, such as infection or a small cervical tear, are extremely rare. For most people, the benefits of routine cervical screening significantly outweigh any risks.

Cervical screening is recommended for anyone aged 25 to 64 who has a cervix, including individuals who:

· Have received the HPV vaccine

· Are sexually active or have been in the past

· Are post-menopausal

Women who have had a total hysterectomy (removal of the uterus and cervix) for a non-cancerous condition may no longer need smear tests, but it is essential to discuss this with your healthcare provider to ensure that you receive appropriate screening based on your individual circumstances.
